FreeFall

My first exposure to Ed Collins was while he was in FreeFall. FreeFall actually began as a band called "If Looks Are Important" from Indianapolis, Indiana. The band soon changed their name to "The Weekend" and relocated to northeastern Pennsylvania in November of 1987, when the club scene started to fall apart in Indianaoplis. The band at that time consisted of Rita (vocals), Curt Turner (keyboards), John Anderson (guitar), Dan Holeva (bass) and Ed Collins (drums), and decided to call themselves FreeFall. Rita left the band in February of 1988, and Curt and Ed shared vocal duties. The band played a mix of Hard Rock classics (Boston, Aerosmith, The Sweet) and Commerical Hits (The Tubes, The Commodores) among others.

Crowds began to grow, and FreeFall became one of the hottest bands on the NEPA club circut. Ed's strong voice lead to his handling of more of the band's material and his strong songwriting skills began to surface as FreeFall began to encorporate original material into their sets.

Around 1990, Ed set up an 8-track recording studio in his Grandmother's one-car garage, and the band recorded a demo of these 8 original songs, 7 of which were written by Ed and all of which were sung by him:

  • Too Late
  • B.O.D.
  • Call Me
  • Can You Feel The Music
  • Hang Tough
  • It's Alright
  • Lovin' You
  • Take What You Can Get
(note, these songs are available for download from Curt Turner's website at http://www.turner3d.net/seed)

Of note during this time, Ed had the opportunity to try out for Ace Frehley's band, but decided against it, believing that his band would eventually be signed. Instead, Ed and Jon left FreeFall in May of 1991 after a disagreement with Curt and Dan over the management of the band. Jon relocated back to Indianaoplis. FreeFall continued along for 8 more years, changing it's name to Seed, along with a major alteration of their material (Bush, Marilyn Manson), before calling it a day. 7 of the 8 FreeFall demo tracks eventually wound up on a future project of Ed's, but first, Ed would make his national-recording debut with Dirty Looks
