Pod
In 1992, with dwindling crowds in Pennsylvania, Ed decided to fold Fallen Angel and move back to Indianapolis. He hooked up with his ex-FreeFall guitarist Jon Anderson in a project called Almost Noah (which I'll get into later), and they played the Indianapolis/Louisville area. During that time, Ed also played in other projects on the side including "Mama Sez" and "The Cause." You can read the Mama Sez info sheet here. Unfortunately, that is all the information I have on that band, and I have no information on The Cause other than to say that Ed was in that band according to a now-defunct bio I once saw online.
The main project that Ed was involved with during this period was Pod. Pod was a three piece band, that included ex-FreeFall bassist Dan Holeva, and guitarist Steve DeAcutis. The band recorded an independent CD, "Hung", which included a retitled re-recording of the Fallen Angel song Hanging Out On The Corner, and ex-FreeFall keyboardist Curt Turner also performed on a track:
- Freight Train
- Roger's Theme
- The Pain Duplex Part A: Deception
- The Pain Duplex Part B: Love
- Love
- Face Potatoe'd
- In fo ma shun
- One World Mind
- Sync
- One Day Ten Years Ago (Hanging Out On The Corner)
- Nothing
This CD is the first time Ed's own music was released on Compact Disc. The band performed a select few shows together (including one that got a write up in the Wilkes-Barre Citizen's Voice. You can read that article here). Stage Right Management really worked the labels with this CD, and that prompted record executive John Kalodner (of Foreigner, Aerosmith fame) to sign the band to Columbia/Sony Records. Alice In Chains engineer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley was brought in to produce the album, and artist Hugh Syme (who designed cover art for Journey, Rush and Megadeth among others) created the album art. There was talk of Pod opening for a Journey reunion tour (at the time, Journey with Steve Perry had reformed and were in the process of recording their 1996 release). Pod went to Los Angeles, and recorded the album "Headed For The Zeros" - I believe (but I'm not positive) that Dan Holeva did not record the album with the band, and the bass player MAY have been Doug Henthorn (formerly of Jason Bonham's Bonham.
The result (in my opinion) was an album that lacked the dynamics of "Hung" - something that was very apparant because many of the tracks (although renamed) were retooled versions of songs from "Hung":
- Overrated
- Desperate Things (Roger's Theme)
- Forty Pages Run
- Freight Train
- Bad Sky
- Headed For The Zeros
- Thinking
- The London Fog Quartet (Face Potato'ed)
- Cylicyben Trixhead
- Staying Home The Pain Duplex Part 2 (The Pain Duplex Part A: Deception)
- Sync
Unfortunately, the album never made it to the stores, and Pod was dropped from the label, so the Journey tour never materialized, and the band didn't last much longer afterwards. Ed's next brush with a label came with Almost Noah.
